Taschen's book Vain and Vapid features Paris Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld's apartment. The apartment is sleek, spacious and spare - but seriously, does she live there? I would never have guessed a fashion/style icon lives in this space. It's a bit blah.
Veruschka, the Russian born
supermodel of the 6o’s, has teamed with author David Wills to write a
book about her life and career that will appeal to fashion, history and
photography enthusiasts alike. She was born into a very wealthy family,
her father, a German count, was sentenced to death by hanging because
of his involvement in a plot to kill Hitler, and she spent most of WWII in labor camps with her remaining family.
Veruschka studied art in Hamburg and then, at the age of 20, was
discovered by photographer Ugo Mulas. She then moved to New York to
join the Ford Modeling Agency. She has worked with Salvador Dali and
photographers Peter Beard, Steven Meisel, Irving Penn and Richard Avedon.
Published by French house Assouline, Veruschka is set for a limited-edition release in September. Source: JC Report.
Madonna Confessions is the first official (and Madge authorized)
book on the most famous woman in the world since
the 1992 release of Sex. The book's more than 250 images showcase the provocative
themes of the pop icons live performances from equestrian to urban Bedouin, and
from glam punk to disco fever. Images were taken by Guy Oseary, CEO of Maverick and Madonna's manager, who has worked closely with the singer for two decades. The book drops October 1 and can be pre-ordered at Power House Books.
IADORE Simon Doonan - ADORE him! He never preaches about what is appropriate - only about being fabulous no matter who you are, no matter what the occasion, what you do or your age. The author, style icon and creative director for Barneys New York is offended by "witless good taste." I agree - good taste and being appropriate - so boring. For example, I read an interview with another style icon in a magazine recently and she said no one over the age of thirty should EVER wear a short skirt. "But what if she has exceptional legs," the reporter inquired. The response - NEVER! I disagree with this type of style rule. Yes - I am over thirty and while I may have many flaws - my legs are not one of them. What would Simon say? I think he would say: wear the short skirt - everywhere! I'll read the book and report back soon. Here are some pictures of Simon and me at Barneys in San Francisco tonight. His book, Eccentric Glamour, is available at Amazon. P.S. The back of his jacket reads - Good Taste Doesn't Exist.
Pourquoi Pas? The spring issue of David Downton’s (Europe's leading fashion illustrator) bi-annual journal of fashion illustration will feature portraits of Italian fashion writer and style icon Anna Piaggi by Karl Lagerfeld and a saucy pen-and-ink centerfold of burlesque queen Dita Von Teese. It won’t be available for a few months but you can still buy the fall edition on the magazine's website. Photo source.
