Serge Sorokko Gallery, one of my favorites in the city, is currently showing seven different permutations of Damien Hirst's Skull screenprints. I found the presentation interesting and reminiscent of the Warhol inspired Dom Pérignon tribute I posted a couple of days ago. iWant. The gallery also has a new rendering of Hirst's "Golden Calf" which provides two different angles of its namesake sculpture which sold for $18 million dollars at auction in 2008. If you are planning on being in San Francisco in the next couple of months you should check it out.
Dom Pérignon pays tribute to Andy Warhol with a limited edition champagne bottle released exclusively in Spain. Inspired by the Pop Art icon, the bottles feature the colors he used most frequently in his work: blue, red, violet, emerald green, lilac and yellow. Luxury blog Luxuo has a cool video to promote the collection. I'd love to have a print of this!
Coco Chanel biopics are very much in fashion with three films profiling the designer at different life stages over the last two years. I'm most excited about "Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky" in theaters now. The movie was chosen as the Closing Film of last year's Cannes Film Festival and has received great reviews - except for Karl, who reportedly hates the movie for the unflattering light it sheds on his predecessor. Although, in the end he was a good sport about it all and provided costumes and allowed access to Chanel's salon.
I am particularly looking forward to seeing the performance by french actor (and Chanel muse) Anna Mouglalis. I thought "Coco Avant Chanel" was OK - but Coco was portrayed as sweet, almost innocent - two adjectives that don't come to my mind when I think of the designer.
In an interview with WWD, Mouglalis said of Coco, "She is recognized as a huge feminist, but most of the things she did,
she did for herself and not for women in general,”
noting the designer was a notoriously difficult boss to her all-women
staff. “I would even push it further, thinking she was more of a
misogynist than a feminist, since she only had male friends.”
